Covid-19 infected men may face long-term poor semen quality

Copenhagen, Jun 26 (Prensa Latina) Men have less concentration and less motility of sperm up to more than three months after having suffered a mild infection by Covid-19, according to the results of a Spanish multicenter study presented at the 39th Congress of the European Society for Reproduction and Embryology in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Specifically, the study shows that, after at least 100 days of having tested negative for Covid-19 in men, there is no improvement in the number and motility of spermatozoa, despite the fact that new spermatozoa have been produced during This weather.

“There have been previous studies showing that semen quality is affected in the short term after a Covid-19 infection, but, to our knowledge, none have followed men for a longer period of time. We assumed that the semen quality would improve once new sperm are generated, but this is not the case We do not know how long it may take for semen quality to be restored and it may be the case that Covid-19 causes permanent damage, even in men who suffered only a mild infection”, explained Dr. Rocío Núñez Calonge, scientific director of a group of assisted reproduction clinics that carried out the study.

Scientists recalled that SARS-CoV-2 virus can affect testicles and spermatozoa, but the mechanism is still unknown, yet it is presumed that inflammation and damage to the immune system could be involved.

“The inflammatory process can destroy germ cells by infiltrating white blood cells involved in the immune system and reduce testosterone levels by affecting interstitial cells that produce male hormone,” the research underlined.

The scientists do not dismiss the deterioration of semen requirements may not be due to a direct effect of SARS-CoV-2, so it is likely there are additional factors contributing to the long-term decline in sperm parameters.
