According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Chinese authorities described the situation that broke out in the Russian Federation last Saturday as a purely internal matter. However, they expressed support for Moscow, reminding that Russia is a friendly neighbor and a strategic partner with whom China maintains coordination in the new era.
Apart from the official statement, the Chinese Foreign Minister, Qin Gang, received a few hours ago the Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrei Rudenko, with whom he reviewed issues on bilateral, regional and international agenda.
The visitor also spoke with his counterpart Ma Zhaoxu, who advocated timely communication in order to consolidate mutual ties and protect the interests of each side jointly.
This Saturday, Russia experienced moments of tension after the Wagner PMC staged an armed rebellion, following allegations made by its founder Evgeni Prigozhin of a rocket attack by Russian forces against one of Wagner’s camps, which was denied by the Russian Defense Ministry.
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko initiated talks with Prigozhin following telephone talks with his counterpart Vladimir Putin, and convinced the businessman to put an end to the insurrection.
Prigozhin, who had ordered seizing control of the headquarters of the Southern District of the Russian armed forces in the city of Rostov-on-Don and marching on Moscow, suspended the movement of Wagner’s forces throughout Russian territory and their return to their camps in the Donbas region.
The arrangement with Lukashenko included the cancellation of an investigation opened by Russian security aimed at leveling criminal charges against Prigozhin, who received from President Putin guarantees of protection for members of the PMC and for himself on the condition that he be relocated in Belarus.
