López Obrador asked why he did not eliminate Supreme Court by decree

Mexico City, Jun 23 (Prensa Latina) A journalist on Friday asked President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in Chiapas why he did not eliminate Mexico´s Supreme Court by decree ahead of the Judiciary war against the Executive.

The Mexican leader replied that he has not done so since the Mexican people are the one in charge of doing so, the one who decide and have the right to change their government. He also said that before the end of his term in September 2024 he will pass a reform to the constitution in this regard if a qualified majority is reached in Congress in June 2024 elections.

I hope that we will have a qualified majority that will promote the new change, the definitive purification of the government and that judges, magistrates and ministers will be elected by the people.

To eliminate the Supreme Court by decree as former President Ernesto Zedillo (1994-2000) did would be to give them reasons to tear their clothes and accuse there is a dictatorship in Mexico.

It was already known they were going to annul the law, among other things because ministers violated the Constitution, especially Article 127, which sets forth that no public official may earn more than the President of the Republic.

I earn MXN$140,000 monthly (about USD$8,000) and ministers earn MXN$600,000 (more than USD$33,000), plus a trust fund of MXN$20 billion (USD$1.1 billion) and they are full of privileges. So, Where is the morality when they question the Supreme Court´s procedure?, López Obrador asked.
