Venezuelans celebrate Latin American and Caribbean Unity Day

Caracas, Jun 22 (Prensa Latina) Venezuela Foreign Minister Yván Gil on Thursday celebrated the Latin American and Caribbean Unity Day.

A date that pays tribute to the Amphictyonic Congress held on the same day in 1826, the head of Venezuelan diplomacy wrote on his Twitter account.

He pointed out that on June 22, 2001, the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino) decreed the date, which he considered crucial “to promote Simon Bolivar’s integrationist ideal.”

In his tweet, Gil quoted Commander Hugo Chavez (1954-2013), who said, “Our struggle is for South American integration, Latin American integration.”

“Only united we will be free, and we will be able to face the giants of the world; this is a region of the world that was born to be great and to be free,” the Bolivarian leader noted.

President Nicolas Maduro, in turn, recalled the date and tweeted that Liberator Simón Bolívar’s thought becomes stronger and more valid as time goes by.

Making Our America, the queen of nations and mother of republics, continues to be an imperative need to preserve our peoples’ peace and freedom. “Long live the Great Homeland,” he said.

The commemoration of the Latin American and Caribbean Unity Day was promoted by Parlatino among its member parliaments and approved at the 12th Ordinary Assembly, held in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, from August 23 to 27, 1988.
