Uruguayan department of Canelones and Cuba plan to promote sports

Montevideo, Jun 22 (Prensa Latina) Cuba and the Uruguayan department of Canelones on Thursday signed an agreement to develop collaboration in the field of physical culture and sports.

Cuban Ambassador Zulan Popa penned the agreement on behalf of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (Inder).

The deal was inked on behalf of the Municipality of Canelones by the Secretary General of the Departmental Mayor’s Office, Francisco Lenagni, and will also bear the signature of Mayor Yamandu Orsi.

The accord states that the parties will collaborate to promote sports for recreational purposes, high performance, and for people with disabilities.

The exchange of coaches, teachers and specialists, information and training bases are part of the agreement.

The Cuban diplomat predicted initiatives and projects that will materialize cooperation in the sports sphere between Cuba and Canelones, one of the most populated departments of Uruguay.

The secretary general of the Municipality, Francisco Lenagni, told Prensa Latina that Cuba has achieved recognized success in sports and in the training of specialists despite being a small and blockaded country.

We have to learn from that Cuban experience, said the official, who affirmed that in the current administration of Frente Amplio in the department a dozen sports centers were built, including facilities for artistic gymnastics and athletics tracks.

There are historic ties between Uruguay and Canelones with Cuba, and this agreement strengthens them, he emphasized.
