GOP lawmakers seek to restrict abortion rights

Washington, Jun 21 (Prensa Latina) House Republicans are currently seeking to restrict access to mifepristone pill in order to further limit the right to abortion.

According to Truthout, the conservative-led House Appropriations Committee last week advanced funding legislation that would reverse a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decision favoring the affordability of mifepristone.

FDA’s move allowed mifepristone to be prescribed in telehealth appointments and mailed, as well as allowed retail pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreens to dispense mifepristone instead of only specific health care providers.

The bill must now go to the House, where it is likely to pass, but it is unclear whether it will receive the green light from the Democratic-controlled Senate, the report estimated.

Democratic Rep. Norma Torres, member of the Appropriations Committee, introduced an amendment to remove the provision and keep the FDA rule in place.

“Republicans are trying to hijack the routine appropriations process to push their extreme agenda. They tried today to use a government funding bill to restrict access to medication abortion,” she alleged.

Despite their efforts, the request was rejected by voice vote after GOPers voiced opposition and said the proposal “protects the life” of fetuses.
