Ecuador: 2.9 million children vaccinated against measles, polio

Quito, Jun 21 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador´s Public Health Ministry on Wednesday informed that as many a s 2.9 million children have been vaccinated against measles, rubella and polio.

In a press release, the health ministry reminded that Ecuador´s immunization campaign goal is to vaccinate 3.7 million children (aging 1 – 12) until July 9.

Doses (free of charge) are available at 2,000 health centers nationwide.

Immunization against these three diseases is part of the basic vaccination program in Ecuador.

In recent statements to local press, Ecuadorian Public Health Minister José Ruales detailed that vaccines against measles and rubella will be given to children aged 2-12, while polio immunization will be given to children aged 1-7.

Past February, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an epidemiological alert warning about possible measles outbreaks given shortage of vaccination in the region.

PAHO estimates that over 1.7 million children in 28 nations and territories in the Americas did not receive the first measles vaccine dose in their first year of life.
