The parties jointly identified areas of strategic commitment to expand early warning, conflict prevention and mediation actions as a call to address the root causes of infighting.

The document strengthens the institutional support of the Secretariat of the Fund for Peace, improves collaboration in preventive diplomacy and mediation, resource mobilization and collaborates in commitments on the ongoing review of the Global Financial Architecture.

The funds will be used for the first time this year on various programmes, including interventions in the Sudan crisis, the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia and the East African Community Regional Force.

The director of the AU Peace Fund Secretariat, Dagmawit Moges, highlighted the mutual collaboration with development partners in order to reinforce the gaps in preventive interventions to avoid crises and instability, as well as the deployment of rapid and sustainable measures when a crisis arises in the continent.

Moges placed greater emphasis on achieving lasting peace in Africa and inclusive development, in order to advance progress goals and achieve the AU-driven Agenda 2063.

The agreement strengthens the existing partnership between the African Union Commission and WFP in other areas of cooperation, including humanitarian affairs, emergency preparedness and response, post-conflict recovery and infrastructure rehabilitation, economic and social recovery, food security, agriculture, and the fight against poverty and hunger.
