The last two regions declared as protected areas were Lomas de La Canoa-Cueva La Chucha and Lomas La Tasajera, said Nestor Alvarez, sub-delegate of Environment in Sancti Spíritus province.
Alvarez, also serving as specialist at the Science, Technology and Environment Ministry, stressed that three new areas are under approval phase, one of which is Sierra de Las Damas Natural Site.
This area has landscape and historical values, since in 1896, Major General Serafín Sánchez of the Cuban Liberation Army fell in combat in a spot in this mountain range.
Manatí, in the area of the municipality of La Sierpe, is another area under approval, Alvarez stated, as well as Hornos de Cal, which will be administered by the Office of the City Conservator of Sancti Spíritus.
The three files were submitted and are under approval phase, while the other two will be administered by the Provincial Enterprise for the Protection of Flora and Fauna.
Cuban and U.S. scientists declared the Silvertown site, located on the southern coast of Espiritu (Tunas de Zaza) as a unique coral bank.
