The initiative to be implemented over the next five years was discussed and approved during a high-level ministerial meeting to analyze IGAD´s next post-harvest management strategy.
IGAD said that, with the support of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), it had drawn up a strategy for food safety in 2022, with the aim of strengthening food safety systems in the region and implementing fair practices in food marketing.
IGAD’s Director of Agriculture and Environment Daher Elmi, on behalf of the regional body’s Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu, said the regional strategies for post-harvest management and food security to be validated at the meeting seek to address recurrent food insecurity issues.
Elmi expressed IGAD’s commitment to rolling out such initiatives and working hand in hand with member states and development partners to move towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union’s 2063 Agenda.
