The demonstrations, launched on June 5 in the northwestern city by the education sector demanding better salaries, now include a majority of indigenous people from the entire region, 157 of whose 300 communities were the only ones to endorse the new Magna Carta, the newspaper adds.
“Cornered by the blockades, Governor Gerardo Morales backs down but does not stop the protest”, the publication points out, while the authorities announce for this Tuesday the vote on the mentioned constitutional reform, and the indigenous protests demand its total repeal.
According to Página/12, Morales dreamed of showing his power this Tuesday by swearing in the Constitution, reformed to his liking, but he did not count on the repercussions of the brutal police repression with rubber bullets, which caused several serious injuries and removed a 17 year old boy’s eye.
