According to the study of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), inflation in this country increased 1,5% in January to last May period.
The highest increase in the inter-annual variation in May was in housing, water, electricity and gas at 10,9%; food and non-alcoholic beverages, 4,2%; and miscellaneous goods and services 3,8%, in that order.
Transportation, health, clothing and footwear, communications, and recreation and culture decreased, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Census.
The press release also notes that the inflation rate in May with respect to April experienced a variation of 0,2%, with a higher incidence in transportation, food and non-alcoholic beverages, furniture, household items, and miscellaneous goods and services.
Recently, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Héctor Alexander, highlighted that Panama has a consumer price index of 2,9% below Latin America and the world.
However, economist Raúl Moreira told the newspaper La Estrella de Panamá that this indicator could continue to increase, considering that the end of the fuel subsidy will coincide with the second half of the year, when prices rise.

Suben precios de viviendas, alimentos y electricidad en Panamá
Ciudad de Panamá, 19 jun (Prensa Latina) Los grupos de vivienda, electricidad y alimentos sobresalen como los más caros en Panamá, señala hoy un informe de la Contraloría General de la República.
De acuerdo con el estudio del Índice de Precios al Consumidor (IPC), la inflación en el istmo aumentó 1.5 por ciento en el periodo acumulado de enero a mayo último.
El mayor incremento en la variación interanual de mayo se dio en vivienda, agua, electricidad y gas en 10.9 por ciento; alimentos y bebidas no alcohólicas, 4.2 por ciento; y en bienes y servicios diversos 3.8 por ciento, en ese orden.
Disminuyeron transporte, salud, prendas de vestir y calzado, comunicaciones, y recreación y cultura, según datos del Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas y Censo.
También el comunicado apunta que la tasa de inflación de mayo con respecto a abril experimentó una variación de 0.2 por ciento, con mayor incidencia en transporte, alimentos y bebidas no alcohólicas, muebles, artículos para el hogar y bienes y servicios diversos.
Recientemente, el ministro de Economía y Finanzas, Héctor Alexander, destacó que Panamá tiene un índice de precio al consumidor de 2.9 por ciento por debajo de América Latina y el mundo.
Sin embargo, el economista Raúl Moreira, dijo al diario La Estrella de Panamá que ese indicador podría seguir incrementándose, si se tiene en cuenta que el fin del subsidio al combustible coincidirá con el segundo semestre del año, en el cual suben los precios.
