The Ministry of Energy and Mines asked the National Electricity Commission (CNEE) to submit a technical report in order to consider the approval of this status, according to Republica newspaper.
The emergency focuses all the sector’s efforts to guarantee supply when difficult situations are expected or natural disasters occur, while one of its points leads to the suspension of exports and maintenance of generators, particularly with a growing demand due to the current heat wave and higher consumption in all areas.
In Guatemala, the sugar mills during the sugar harvest season (from November to May) contribute to the system through the burning of sugarcane bagasse, and then the hydroelectric plants are responsible for most of the demand.
Now, due to the drought caused by the El Niño phenomenon, coal, gas and bunker (fuel that normally comes from the first stage of the refining process) cover a large part of the demands.
