Ecuador closes electoral registration week

ecuador-closes-electoral-registration-week
Quito, Jun 17 (Prensa Latina) The electoral panorama in Ecuador became somewhat more defined in the week that ends today, after the political organizations registered their candidates for the presidency and the National Assembly.

In total, eight names seek to appear on the presidential ballot for the early general elections that will take place on August 20.

The only woman on the list is the representative of the Correísta movement Revolución Ciudadana (RC), Luisa González, who, together with her running mate, Andrés Arauz, assures she will “recover the Homeland” from the chaos in which neoliberal governments left her.

At this time, that candidacy is on hold, as the National Electoral Council (CNE) gave 48 hours to correct formal details in the registration process.

The same happens with the “Construye” collective, which sponsors Fernando Villavicencio, a figure close to the ruling party whose registration to participate in the votes had some observations.

On the other hand, Xavier Hervas, another of those seeking to reach the presidential chair through the RETO movement, is facing a challenge request for allegedly having assets in tax havens, which is prohibited in the country.

Meanwhile, the CNE has already validated the participation in the votes of the candidates Yaku Pérez, Daniel Noboa, Jan Topic, Otto Sonnenholzner and Bolívar Armijos.

Among all these options, the RC is considered the organization with the greatest strength and influence at the national level in view of the elections, which will take place on August 20 in an extraordinary way, after President Guillermo Lasso decreed the cross death.

The sociologist Agustín Burbano Lasso warned about the obstacles on the part of State institutions that -as on previous occasions- this progressive movement will have to face in the electoral process.

Last Tuesday, the National Police fired tear gas at the RC candidates at the time that González and Arauz went to the CNE headquarters to formalize the registration.

According to the official schedule, from August 8 to 17, the candidates will be able to campaign, although they already carry out tours, meetings with groups that support them and disseminate their proposals on social networks and interviews in the media.
