The Nicaraguan Ambassador to Chile Gadiel Arce recalled that Prensa Latina was founded after a massive press conference in Havana to dismantle lies against the Cuban Revolution, in what was called Operation Truth.
Arce warned that fake news against Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela still persists, and for such a reason, I would like to congratulate Prensa Latina for its hard work.
Amelia Sánchez, the third secretary of the Cuban embassy in Chile, recalled that Prensa Latina foundation was an idea of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro and Commander Ernesto Che Guevara to provide a different vision from that provided by big media monopolies.
Diplomats, journalists, representatives of political parties, the movement of solidarity with Cuba, the Bicentennial Union of the Peoples, and the Cuban Roots Association also participated in the event.
Analyst and member of the political commission of the Communist Party of Chile Juan Andrés Lagos highlighted how Prensa Latina covered the entire process in Chile before the inauguration of the Popular Unity government, during that period and after the coup d’état.
In this regard, the news agency’s chief correspondent in Chile Carmen Esquivel recalled that after the September 11, 1973 coup, Prensa Latina´s offices in Santiago were raided and its journalists expelled from the country.
At present, Prensa Latina has representatives in some 40 countries and over 100 correspondents around the world. It transmits some 400 daily news translated into six languages and has collaboration agreements with other media.
During the ceremony, held at the headquarters of the Santiago Journalists’ Circle, human rights lawyer Rubén Jerez praised the presence of another lawyer Mónica Araya whose parents were murdered by the 1976 regime.
