The inaugural session was led by the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, the FAO regional representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, Mario Lubetkin, and the leaders of the chambers of deputies and senators of the host country, Vlado Mirosevic and Juan Antonio Coloma, respectively.
Lubetkin read a message sent by the director general of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Qu Dongyu, who was unable to travel to the summit.
In his text, the senior official called for evaluating new forms of cooperation and identifying innovative solutions to address the challenges that hunger and food insecurity now pose to the entire world.
The FAO director general recognized the importance of parliamentary work in designing laws and influencing governments to improve production, nutrition, the environment and people’s quality of life.
President Gabriel Boric said that no effort is minor or secondary in the fight against hunger and the search for food security and sustainable agriculture.
