Lebanese Parliament urged to guarantee presidential election

Beirut, Jun 14 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Special Coordinator in Lebanon, Joanna Wronecka, today called on the members of Parliament to take urgent measures to guarantee the election of the President of the Republic.

Through her Twitter account, the representative of the multilateral body commented on the failure of the presidential session for the twelfth time since the start of the voting process last September 29.

Wronecka emphasized that the prolonged power vacancy undermines democratic practices in the nation and delays the long-awaited solutions needed to return Lebanon to the path of recovery.

The UN coordinator’s statement came hours after Parliament failed to appoint a new representative of the Maronite Christian community to succeed Michel Aoun, who ended his term of office on October 31.

For the first time, the convocation of the legislature was attended by its 128 members and the head of the institution, Nabih Berri, suspended the session when he lost the quorum in the second round.

The main nominees Jihad Azour and Suleiman Franjieh obtained the support of 59 and 51 deputies, respectively; meanwhile, the presence in seven ballots of the name of former minister Ziad Baroud was surprising.

According to the count, the New Lebanon list obtained eight votes, while one vote was for Army General Joseph Aoun and Arab Jihad, and one ballot was cancelled.

Lebanon is grappling with the difficulties of more than seven months of power vacuum, in the absence of political consensus, deteriorating economic conditions and under an interim government with limited constitutional powers.
