Diaz-Canel, in his post as president pro tempore of such organization of developing countries, has invited them to this meeting under the logo “Current Challenges of Development: The Role of Science, Technology and Innovation.”
The encounter should serve to strengthen the unity of the member countries and decide on collective and practical actions to effectively face contemporary challenges, said the president in a video issued on Twitter.
The also head of State added that the meeting could help the nations that are part of the Group to find and design side-by-side feasible solutions to the most serious problems facing the world.
Diaz-Canel pointed out on the meeting’s main issue that the diagnoses seem increasingly clearer, since scientific and technical progress, which is key to achieving sustainable development, is inaccessible to a large part of humankind.
The leader denounced that such problems stemmed from the unfair international economic order, which has exacerbated the socioeconomic and scientific-technical marginalization of many countries with serious consequences for the nations of the South.
The president noted that sustainable development must be encouraged by the members of the Group of 77 plus China, which represents 80 percent of the world’s population and more than two thirds of the membership of the United Nations.
Since January 2023, Cuba took up, for the first time, the pro tempore presidency of the Group of 77 plus China, with the commitment to advance on the common interests of the South.
