“If they do not observe the 24-hour ceasefire, the facilitators will be forced to consider suspending” talks in the Saudi city of Jeddah, which have been in danger since late last month, the mediators announced the day before.
Since April 15, armed clashes between the regular army and paramilitaries have unleashed chaos in Khartoum, the capital, and the western region of Darfur, the epicenter of a bloody conflict that erupted in 2003.
More than 1,800 people have been killed in the last three months, according to the Armed Conflict Events and Location Data Project, while the United Nations reports nearly 2 million displaced people, including 476,000 who have sought refuge in other countries.
” The 24-hour cease-fire, if honored, will provide an important opportunity … for the parties to undertake confidence-building measures that could enable the resumption of the Jeddah talks,” the mediators’ statement said.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese government on Thursday declared the UN envoy to the country, Volker Perthes, persona non grata, accusing him for several weeks of being responsible for the ongoing war.
The head of the Sudanese army, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane, had called for the dismissal of the senior diplomat, accusing him of being responsible for the war.
