Despite the fact that it is an obsolete type of diplomacy whose first recorded uses were in ancient Greece, the coercive measures, visa restrictions and the political embargo are part of the US behavior.

But despite all the evidence since then showing that they are generally ineffective and often counterproductive, the U.S. has developed a preference for imposing sanctions on countries because they allow them to act aggressively at a low price, the newspaper article explains.
