Fernández Retamar played a leading role in the cultural policy of the Cuban Revolution, and his work was linked to the world of literature due to his interest in writing.
He has been awarded several prizes, including Member of Honor of the Chilean Writers’ Society in 1972, the Rubén Darío Latin American Poetry Prize in Nicaragua in 1980, the Nikola Vaptsarov International Poetry Prize in Bulgaria in 1989, and the Pérez Bonalde International Poetry Prize in Venezuela in 1994, among others.
