Spanish President Pedro Sanchez announced that after holding talks with Von der Leyen both agreed to bring forward her trip and that of the European Union (EU) commissioners to July 3. Two days earlier, Spain will officially take up the six-month EU presidency; however, there have been shifts to the original program due to the general elections called by Sanchez for July 23.
Von der Leyen´s visit coincided with the start of July 7´s election campaign, so this date was changed.
From Brussels, Ursula von der Leyen’s spokesperson stressed that the July 3 visit will focus on the joint work between the European Commission and the Spanish presidency of the Council.
