Families renew hopes of finding disappeared in Uruguay

Macarena-Gelman
Montevideo, Jun 8 (Prensa Latina) Expectations to find those missing were renewed today as the remains of a detainee dissapeared during the dictatorship in Uruguay were found, one of the relatives of the victims said.

Former Frente Amplio deputy Macarena Gelman, daughter of Argentinean disappeared detainees María Claudia García and Marcelo Gelman, told the press that despite being “strong images”, it is comforting to confirm once again that the bodies were found.

Her statements came after human remains were found this week in the area of the 14th Infantry Battalion of the Army, in the Department of Canelones.

This place used to be a detention and torture center that operated in Uruguay between 1973 and 1985, although there are fatal victims from before that period due of repression.

Gelman said that the discovery “renews expectations, renews hopes, renews strength and confirms that this is the way to follow”.

She highlighted the hard work the team of anthropologists is developing, led by expert Alicia Luisardo, whose work continues at the site, where in 2011 and 2012 two other missing persons were recovered.

Macarena Gelman regretted the lack of willingness to provide “information from those responsible” for the crimes.

According to official data, in Uruguay there are 192 detainees during the dictatorship who are still missing.
