Directed by renowned Cuban actor and filmmaker Jorge Perugorría, the First International Film and Environment Festival of the Caribbean opening in that territory on May 31 became a space to raise awareness and make visible the necessary action in favor of the planet.
The non-competitive festival promoted audiovisual works in defense of nature, provided by the GoodPlanet Foundation, Cinema Planeta, and the Green Film Network international association, the ACN reported.
A dozen films that have won awards in such events were screened, including materials produced in Cuba with the collaboration of the Antonio Núñez Jiménez Foundation and the Environmental Defense Fund.
As part of the festival, the films “Home” (2009) and “Legacy, Notre Héritage” (2021) by French filmmaker Yann Arthus-Bertrand were screened at the Caribe movie theater in Nueva Gerona.
The Isla Verde Awards were bestowed to prominent figures whose career or work was related to environmental protection and preservation.
This time, Cuban free-diving world record holder Deborah Andollo, French filmmaker Yann Arthus-Bertrand, and Eleonora Isunza, director of Cinema Planeta and Mexico’s International Film and Environment Festival, received the awards.
The festival also paid posthumous tribute to Cuban rapper Osmel Francis Turner (1961-2022), to whom the distinction was also conferred.
