The Science, Technology and Environment Ministry Representative in Ciego de Avila, Rafael Perez, pointed out the province is presently conducting two international projects rolled out by the UN Development Program: Coastal Resilience in the northern coast, and My Coast in the south.
Both programs are based on the search for natural solutions to adapt to climate change, including reforestation and natural regeneration assisted with mangrove species to recover the barrier function of these places, Perez noted.
The idea is to favor communities to protect them from extreme weather events and sea level rise, as well as to facilitate the socio-economic development plans of local sectors and government.
He explained they have 16 special showing areas in operation, named soil, water and forest conservation polygons, with an integrated approach to sustainable land management; in addition to setting up centers for the production of organic fertilizers.
The World Environment Day is celebrated every June 5, since 1972 when UN General Assembly (UNGA) set such a date.
