French government deploys police to face protest against reform

Paris, Jun 5 (Prensa Latina) French Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, announced yesterday that 11,000 policemen and gendarmes will be deployed on Tuesday in a new national mobilization of the unions against the already promulgated retirement reform.

In his Twitter account, the official specified that four thousand of the uniformed men will be in Paris, “to ensure the safety of the demonstrations and guarantee the right to demonstrate”.

According to Darmanin, the intelligence services anticipate the presence of ultra-left members from abroad, which is why at least 17 administrative bans were issued against some of these people.

The authorities expect up to 600 thousand participants in the fourteenth national day of protests against the reform that extends the legal retirement age from 62 to 64 years, the most repudiated theme of the initiative.

In statements to the BFM TV network, the general secretary of the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), Sophie Binet, considered the application of the regulation as of September 1 “totally irresponsible” and called on the unions to ratify their opposition in the streets on Tuesday.

This Sunday, the Official Gazette of the French Republic published two decrees on the application of the retirement reform, one of them to extend the retirement age to 64 years.
