FAO supports urban, suburban and family agriculture in Cuba

Havana, June 2 (Prensa Latina) The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) informed today that it provided agricultural inputs and tools to Cuba's Urban, Suburban and Family Agriculture Program.

This support is carried out in the context of the Technical Cooperation Program to maintain local food systems in operation after the Covid-19 pandemic, the FAO Representation said in a statement.

The contribution includes wheelbarrows, machetes, fumigation backpacks, shovels and gloves, and is destined to several green houses of the country dedicated to the diversified production of vegetables and fresh condiments for the population.

On Wednesday, part of the resources were delivered to the Revolution Square greenhouses, located in the capital’s municipality of the same name, where they combine cultivation and commercialization of food with the production of seeds and seedlings that supply other production centers.

Elizabeth Peña, the director of Urban, Suburban and Family Agriculture of the Ministry of Agriculture, thanked FAO for the materialization of the donation and its permanent accompaniment to the development of sovereign and sustainable food systems in Cuba.

She explained that the contribution was managed with the objective of maintaining local food systems in operation after the impact of the pandemic, and focuses on three decisive sub-programs of Urban, Suburban and Family Agriculture in the country.

These are seed production, agro-ecological management of pests and diseases in vegetable production units, and training.
