WFP reported today that the provision of food aid to four and a half million people in conflict-affected areas is at risk, even as it works to increase its operations and care for the hungry.
One of WFP’s main logistical bases in Africa is located at El Obeid and serves operations in Sudan and South Sudan, according to United Nations (UN) officials.
Losses have been estimated by WFP at more than $60 million dollars since the fighting began, and more than 19 million people, 40 percent of the country’s population, have been affected.
Meanwhile, Fatima Mohammed Cole, the deputy representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Sudan, said that attempts to reach the capital and help refugees there have so far failed and the two offices in Khartoum have been ransacked.
