UNHCR chief warns mass exodus in Sudan

Khartoum, May 30 (Prensa Latina) The Commissioner of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi on Tuesday has warned that the earlier estimate of around one million people fleeing the nation due to the Sudan War by October is potentially an underestimation.

After touring part of the Sudanese-Egyptian border, Grandi also said that the escalating conflict could lead to increased human trafficking and arms proliferation throughout the fragile region.

Amid such a conflict between the Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, human trafficking and weapons trade in Sudan could increase.

According to humanitarian organizations, countries hosting Sudanese refugees include Egypt, Chad and South Sudan.

Reports from medical sources have estimated that civilian deaths in Sudan are close to 1,000, among them 190 children, with over 6,000 wounded and manifold missing and displaced people.
