Brasilia, May 30 (Prensa Latina) The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, advocated today in Brazil for the exchange of public debt of the countries in compensation for the protection of the environment.

During the opening of the summit of presidents convened by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, he asserted that this exchange is the first step to face the world climate crisis.

Upon arriving at Itamaraty Palace, headquarters of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he emphasized to the press that this is a worldwide proposal made from Colombia.

“The exchange of public debt for climate action, which would be the first great leap forward in a real fight against the climate crisis, which is the main problem of humanity”, the President said.

In his opinion, “the world outlook is critical” and he stressed that “America has to play a united role and a unified voice”.

Likewise, in terms of integration, Petro pointed out that Latin America “is united in speeches, but not in concrete projects” and considered that “it is not about fighting with the world, it is about overcoming the world’s problems, helping”, he said.

According to the President, the region, and Colombia in particular, has great potential to work on electric interconnection.

Also participating in the meeting of South American leaders are the presidents of Argentina, Alberto Fernández; Bolivia, Luis Arce; Chile, Gabriel Boric; Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso; Guyana, Irfaan Ali; Paraguay, Mario Abdo Benítez; Surinam, Chan Santokhi, and Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, as well as the President of the Council of Ministers of Peru, Alberto Otárola.
