Mahuta announced the funding as part of a United Nations pledging event in New York.
The foreign minister said the Horn of Africa is going through the most severe drought in decades, with five consecutive failed rainy seasons.
“At least 43.3 million people in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia require life-saving and life-sustaining assistance,” the diplomat said.
New Zealand’s contribution includes 5.75 million dollars to the International Committee of the Red Cross, the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), and the Ethiopian Humanitarian Fund.
