The authorities did not disclose any further details for the arrest but local media and analysts agree in pointing out that this is a new name in the onslaught against former magistrates by the head of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Consuelo Porras.
Among the proceedings led by Campo and his team, the arrest warrant for former Minister of Culture Elder Suchite, former Minister of Communications Jose Luis Benito and former judge Mynor Moto stood out.
In April 2021, he confirmed an investigation involving former President Jimmy Morales, related to the expulsion of the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala.
In that same month, Porras made changes in the heads of different units of the institution and removed Campo from the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office to the one dedicated to dealing with migrants’ trafficking.
Over a dozen former Guatemalan justice operators are in detention or in exile, among them the former head of the Public Prosecutor’s Office Thelma Aldana (2014-2018) and prosecutor Andrei Gonzalez.
Several countries expressed on previous occasions their ‘concern’ over the arrest warrants against former prosecutors ordered by the Porras-led government body.
