The report, issued in April, noted that the number of readers has fallen by a little more than 12 percent since 2016, when 80.8 percent of the population aged 18 and older read, compared to 68.5 percent of readers in 2023.
Regarding reading habits, the cultural materials considered were books, magazines, newspapers, comic books (or comics), Internet pages, forums, and blogs.
Young people aged 18 to 24 were the best readers, with eight out of ten readings, compared to six out of ten adults aged 65 and older.
In the same age group, the indicator dropped more among women. Only five out of ten females reviewed such cultural information.
Eighty-three percent of the Mexican population who do not usually read said they were not encouraged to go to libraries or bookstores, and 79.7 percent stated that neither their teachers nor their parents read.
