“When Jose Marti died in Dos Rios, he was only 42 years old, but he left behind a political, literary and educational work for all times,” the president wrote on his Twitter account.
Cuba remembers on Friday Marti’s death in Dos Rios, in 1895, during the Necessary War (1895-1898), organized by him as the leading figure of the Cuban Revolutionary Party, which he also founded with the purpose of achieving independence from Spain.
On the morning of May 19, 1895, Marti, who is also known as the Apostle of Cuba’s Independence, was killed during a battle between the forces led by Generalissimo Maximo Gomez and a Spanish column of more than 800 soldiers.
