Silvano-Merced-y-Hou-Sithisophealai
Phnom Penh, May 19 (Prensa Latina) With the signing of an agreement under which Cuba will contribute to training sports coaches and athletes in Cambodia, sports cooperation between Cuba and Cambodia was strengthened recently.

To this end, a Memorandum of Understanding was penned between the Manuel Fajardo University of Physical Culture and Sports Sciences and the National Institute for the Training of Sports and Physical Education Teachers of Cambodia (Nipes).

The rector of the Cuban institution, Silvano Merced, who is currently developing a work program in the Kingdom of Cambodia, inked the document while the Nipes was represented by its rector, Hou Sithisophealai.

The event was chaired by the director general of Sports at the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, Ouk Sethycheat, and Cuban Ambassador to Cambodia Liurka Rodriguez, who also participated in a tour of the training center for Cambodian athletes.

The occasion was also propitious to hold an exchange on Cuba’s experiences in this field, with emphasis on the application of science in the academic improvement of sports.

During the meeting, cooperation in the field of sports was described as an essential part of relations between Cuba and Cambodia, and in particular Ouk Sethycheat praised the work of Cuban volleyball coach Berto Friol.

The silver medal won by the Cambodian men’s volleyball team recently at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games constitutes the best historic performance in that discipline and a clear expression of Cuba’s valuable contribution to the development of sports in the Kingdom, he remarked.
