China says US blockade against Cuba is a coercive policy

Beijing, May 18 (Prensa Latina) China on Thursday affirmed that the United States economic, financial and commercial blockade against Cuba is a byword of Washington's diplomatic coercion, and denounced the damage caused by such unfair practice worldwide.

A press release from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs outlined in three chapters the methods and consequences of Washington’s actions in the political, military, economic, technological and cultural fields, especially for developing nations.

The Foreign Ministry recalled that the White House imposed the system of sanctions against Cuba in 1962, and has maintained it ever since. Over the years, the US Government has even tightened such a policy by adding other unilateral measures, mainly under the administration of Republican President Donald Trump.

“The US 61-year-old blockade has been causing huge economic damage and humanitarian disasters to Cuba (…) covering every area, from fuel, food, daily consumption products to medicines, leaving the country with a severe deficit of supplies,” China’s Foreign Ministry’s press release said.

It also denounced the obstacles imposed on Havana even during the Covid-19 pandemic to access necessary materials, drugs, equipment and medical supplies.

Further on, the Foreign Ministry mentioned other US coercive diplomatic actions against Venezuela, Iran, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Sudan, Belarus, Russia and China, regardless of violations of international law and regulations.

The communiqué referred to Washington’s hand behind several color revolutions in the world, the infiltrations by its intelligence agencies to overthrow democratically elected governments and the use of military bases in order to start wars.

In conclusion, the Foreign Ministry rejected the accusations against China regarding diplomatic coercion, stressed the country’s attachment to the principle of equality and noted that China will never threaten others, nor will it form military coalitions or export ideology.

The Foreign Ministry the statement prior to the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan, where the group will present a possible condemnation of what it considers economic coercion by Beijing.

Such a position would be included in the final declaration of the meeting.
