MORENA calls for open parliament to elect Supreme Court members

Mexico, May 17 (Prensa Latina) Mexico's ruling party, MORENA, took steps on Wednesday to convene an open parliament to elect the judges to the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJN).

Ignacio Mier, a coordinator of the parliamentary group of MORENA, founded by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, on Tuesday said that the call would be made to initiate the parliament in mid-2024.

Mier invited acting and retired justice ministers and those who refuse to submit the election of the SCJN members to a popular consultation to participate in an open parliament on the issue.

Lawmaker Juan Ramiro Robledo stated that if succeeding in a second exercise after August 2024, once that year’s elections are qualified, a consultation would be held to elect one or more ministers.

Mier noted that the open parliament would be held before that date, so invitations will be sent as of this moment and especially next week to those who want to participate and those who have expressed themselves a priori.

Once the Commission decides, the question to be consulted will be sent to Court.
