More than 419,000 people affected by heavy rains in Somalia

Mogadishu, May 16 (Prensa Latina) The torrential rains and floods that have hit areas in central Somalia in recent days have affected more than 419,000 people, including some 219,000 displaced persons, United Nations sources reported on Tuesday.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated in a document that the downpours and landslides have caused several facilities to be closed in Beledweyne City, in Hiiran region, including government offices and hospitals.

Since the rainy season began in March, infrastructure and farmland have also been affected in south-central Hirshabelle and southeast Jubaland states.

Mohamed Moalim, from the Somalia National Disaster Management Agency, stated that five people, including three children, had died due to rains and flooding in Somalia.

The UN humanitarian agency fears that this adverse climatic event could lead to an outbreak of cholera in the region, where the Army is fighting the Islamic extremist group al-Shabab.
