Brazil: Mausoleum where King Pelé rests will be open to the public

Brasilia, May 12 (Prensa Latina) The Ecumenical Necropolis Memorial, in Sao Paulo, where former Brazilian soccer player Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pelé) is buried, will open to the public from next Monday, the cemetery itself reported today.

On the opening day, the space will promote a special event with the first visitors, in the presence of relatives of the considered best soccer player in history.

Visits can be made in two periods: in the morning (between 09:00 a.m. local time and noon) and in the afternoon (from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time).

To know the place, it is necessary to register, free of charge, on the memorial’s website and exchange the ticket for the desired time.

The mortal remains of the so-called King of Soccer would initially be in a space on the ninth floor of the highest vertical cemetery in the world, overlooking Vila Belmiro, the stadium of Santos from São Paulo, the love club of the also nicknamed Black Pearl.

Such premises had been acquired by the player himself in 2003, in homage to his father, Joao Ramos do Nascimento Dondinho, who wore the number nine shirt when he was a player.

However, thinking of better logistics for the visitors, the family of the three-time world champion and the necropolis reached an agreement for him to be buried in a room next to the crematorium, on the first floor.

That space has already received the bodies of his brother Jair, an aunt and Dondinho.

Due to its quality of services, the memorial won the award for the most visited necropolis in the world in 2015 at the World Cemetery Meeting, held in Spain.

O Rei was diagnosed in September 2021 with colon cancer and after treatments and admissions he closed his eyes forever on December 29 at the Albert Einstein hospital in São Paulo, victim of multi-organ failure, the result of the progression of the tumor associated with his previous clinical condition.
