Peru: Uphill effort of the president to continue in office

Lima, May 10 (Prensa Latina) The determination of the Peruvian president, Dina Boluarte, to continue governing, faces criticism, massive disapproval of her management and her wishes that cast doubt on the goal of ending her mandate in 2026.

The president ratified the decision to remain in the Government Palace, in a speech at the reception offered by the delegation of the European Union (EU) for the day of the old continent, in which she highlighted the affinities and cooperation between the entity and its government.

The president, as reported by the Presidency of the Republic, “ratified her firm commitment to continue guiding the destinies of Peru within the constitutional framework.”

She added that she intends to do so by promoting dialogue and consensus with all political and social forces, and attending to the postponed demands of the population.

He also said that the situation in his country is different from that of a few months ago and that “Peru is emerging from the political crisis in a democracy, it is gradually reactivating its economy, recovering jobs and improving living conditions,” he added with obvious optimism. .

Meanwhile, in Puno, a bastion between December 2022 and last March, of large protests, social organizations announced the next resumption of demonstrations, due to the resignation of Boluarte and prompt new general elections, and seek other southern regions to join.

The former Minister of the Interior, Wálter Albán, questioned whether Boluarte could govern until July 2026, when the five-year term for which Pedro Castillo was elected ends, whom she replaced on December 7, when the president was dismissed and imprisoned for attempting the dissolution of Parliament.

According to Albán, the president, who has a disapproval rate of close to 80 percent in the polls, does not govern, “she only does what she has to do to continue in government.”

The decisions, he said, are made by the ultra-conservative bloc that manages the unpopular Congress, with more than 90 percent disapproval, which is dedicated to taking over State institutions, such as the Constitutional Court, including the electoral bodies that they intend to control to continue ruling.

After describing the Government and Congress as fragile – its main support along with that of the Armed Forces – she pointed out that despite this “they believe that Peruvians are going to put up with them staying until 2026” in government.

“They are orphans, they have no real support,” said Albán, who added that the stability that the Government proclaims is artificial, is maintained by the resort to killing and “when the citizen mobilization occurs they will have to leave and give realize what they have done.”

At the same time, the echoes of military unrest persist over a statement by the president in which she denied being responsible for 49 deaths in the repression against the protests and pointed out that the military and police who acted against the protests acted under her protocols and their commands. .

Criticism of Boluarte also came from extreme right-wing parliamentarians, members of the majority bloc in alliance with centrist groups, who demanded that he assume his responsibility and supported the uniformed officers, while left-wing forces condemned what they consider a strategy for impunity for the Chairwoman.

The day after that speech, Boluarte received a visit from the military commanders, without the Government Palace having reported the content of the meeting or disseminating photos of it.
