Joe Biden to deploy 1,500 troops to southern Mexican border

Washington, May 10 (Prensa Latina) President Biden is sending 1,500 active-duty troops to the southern border, while cities across the country are declaring states of emergency and asking for federal support as the country prepares for a surge of migration expected to accompany the lifting of Title 42 border restrictions next week.

As confirmed to the press by the Pentagon Spokesman Gen. Patrick Ryder, the soldiers will be deployed for 90 days to support DOH´s work as Title 42, a measure adopted by Donald Trump under the pretext of the Covid-19 pandemic, ends tomorrow.

With this health program, rolled out by the Centers for Disease Control, over two million migrants have been returned expeditiously to their countries of origin since 2020.

For attorneys, rather than the military, “the Joe Biden administration should restore the right to asylum and prioritize addressing factors that cause people to flee to the United States,” said Vicki Gass, executive director of the Latin America Working Group.

Migration causes, she said, are to be found, among other factors, in dysfunctional economic models and poverty, and as long as there is no solution to these problems “people will continue to look for a better way of life”.

“A military solution is not the answer to this problem,” warned Gass.

On Tuesday, the White House informed that Joe Biden had a phone conversation with his Mexican counterpart Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, which allowed both to coordinate bilaterally the immigration policies to be applied after May 11.

According to a statement, the two leaders discussed the continued close cooperation between U.S. and Mexican border authorities.
