Founded in Havana on May 10, 1908, the publication was one of the strongest pillars of cultural press in its early decades.
Over time, it took on issues related to the country’s social, political, and economic challenges in the years preceding the 1959 revolutionary triumph.
Without adopting a radical or militant position, the magazine’s “En Cuba” (In Cuba) section analyzed aspects of the national situation at the time, reflected the precariousness suffered by most Cubans, and was the voice for politicians’ speeches against the regime.
In the early days of 1959, Bohemia was the first publication that revealed the truth about the events surrounding the attack on the Moncada barracks, a stronghold of the dictatorship in eastern Santiago de Cuba province, on July 26, 1953.
It also showed photos of the crimes and torture committed against the young fighters led by Fidel Castro, and published details of his self-defense and plea, known years later as “History Will Absolve Me”.
Over the years, Bohemia, already at the revolutionary Government’s service, became an important space to monitor all changes that were taking place in Cuba and a platform to denounce the US hostility against the nation.
On Tuesday, Bohemia received the “Premio a la Dignidad” (Dignity Award), granted by the Association of Cuban Journalists (UPEC) to true paradigms for society. It highlights its work in surviving different contexts and historic circumstances to become one of the most enduring and notable references in Cuban journalism.
