Foreign Minister Qin Gang made those remarks during a recent meeting with US Ambassador Nicholas Burns.
The foreign minister considered it imperative to reach a consensus on improving ties and also not crossing red lines, and reminded that getting along well is important for both nations and the rest of the world.
He deplored that the continuous statements and actions from the United States disturb the positive atmosphere achieved after their presidents held talks in Indonesia last year and also interrupt the agenda conceived for other high-level meetings.
Qin confirmed Beijing’s commitment to mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, and called on Washington to do more to put ties back on the right track.
“The United States should stop infringing on China’s sovereignty, security and development interests, handle the Taiwan issue cautiously, and refrain from violating the one-China principle,” he said.
The diplomat also demanded not to support Taiwan’s independence desires in any way, and to appeal to professionalism and calm in the face of fortuitous events.
He also expressed his hope to have more contact with Burns and together contribute to being a bridge between the two powers.
