Ameer Jafar, commander of the APBn-8 Armed Battalion, told reporters that 30 people arrived in the area and targeted Majhi Syed Hossain, leader of the block.
Attackers opened fire and wounded Hossain’s mother, who has been hospitalized and treated at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, he said.
Residents tried to resist attackers and one of them died on the spot, whose body was sent to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, he said.
The rest of criminals managed to flee, he said.
Media reports noted that the Rohingya refugees insist on staying in Bangladesh despite initiatives for their voluntary return to Myanmar due to fear of being confined upon their return.
At the Cox’s Bazar border, nearly one million of the Rohingya ethnic group reside in camps in poor conditions, and most have been there since fleeing a military-led crackdown in Myanmar in 2017.
