Solidarity Brigade continues visit to Cuban province

Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, May 4 (Prensa Latina) The 16th International May First Brigade of Volunteer Work and Solidarity with Cuba, continues today its visit to this central province of the country where it will carry out an extensive program of activities.

Speaking to Prensa Latina the day before, after the reception in this city at the Martyrs’ Memorial, Luiz Francisco Osorio, from Brazil, found similarities between his country and Cuba, especially in culture and African roots.

“I admire Cuba a lot and I was 23 years old here,” this teacher who is also studying a master’s degree in history said, and although it is the first time he is in the Caribbean nation, he said he feels at home and “very identified by the resemblance between one people and the other.”

Despite the fact that Brazil is the South American giant, Cuba demonstrated during Covid-19 its solidarity with many other peoples of the world by sending doctors and vaccines, and also worrying about its own, avoiding as many contagions and deaths as possible, he said.

For her part, Chilean Dolly Tabilo recalled the political teachings in her family since she was a child and stressed that her father always admired this country, which is why his first initiative was to join the Cuba Solidarity Committee.

Tabilo lives in Ovalle, Fourth Region of Coquimbo, Chile, and this is the fourth time she has visited the largest of the Antilles as a member of this brigade, and now she came accompanied by her granddaughter, young Mariana Gomila.

The brigade has 245 members from 29 countries, Ibis Alvisa, senior specialist of the Europe Directorate at the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), said, adding that the largest delegations are those from the United Kingdom and the United States.

The brigade’s director added that there is also an important group of friends from Denmark and Ghana, as well as a representation of Mapuche women who fight in defense of the rights of the women of native peoples.

The program of activities includes exchanges with local authorities, representatives of social and mass organizations, as well as visits to sites of economic, social and cultural interest in the territory, such as the General Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial Hospital.

Likewise, productive work in agricultural cooperatives and organoponic farms.

The Solidarity brigade is expected to participate tomorrow, Friday, together with the people of Sancti Spiritus in the parade for the International Workers’ Day, in the Plaza de la Revolución Mayor General Serafín Sánchez Valdivia of this patrimonial city.

The official farewell will be at the Casa-Museo La Guayabera, on the banks of the Yayabo River, a cultural institution that houses the largest collection of that garment -more than 200-, worn by personalities of politics, culture, sports and science of Cuba and the world.
