Maggiotti offered statements to Prensa Latina´s agency during his participation in the sixth forum of the ECLAC, which analyzes the progress and challenges of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), of the UN 2030 Agenda.
“Greenhouse gases are causing serious damage in the region, such as floods, droughts, rising seas and forest fires,” said the minister, and stated that countries must increasingly become more involved in caring for the environment and see how to mitigate climate change.
Climate action is one of the 17 SDGs established by the UN in 2015, along with others such as the struggle against poverty and hunger, health, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, decent work, and non-polluting energy.
Maggiotti also holds the position of president of the Forum of Ministers and Highest Authorities of Housing and Urban Planning of Latin America and the Caribbean (MINURVI). During his participation in the event, he moderated the panel “Sustainable cities and communities”, another of the goals of the UN until 2030.
“We must work in vulnerable human settlements, which are the ones that suffer the most as a result of global warming, and also apply actions so as to reduce the population living in those slums,” he said.
He recalled that in the last meeting of MINURVI, held in Argentina on April 10th and 11th, the countries committed to generating a green fund of multilateral financing to work on the construction of sustainable housing.
