According to the Cuban Book Institute, the celebration will take place at its headquarters in Old Havana and will be conducted, as usual, by journalist and critic Fernando Rodriguez Sosa.
Researchers, Ivette Fuentes de la Paz and Virgilio Lopez Lemus, scholars of Cuban poetry, and poet and translator Josefina de Diego, García Marruz’s niece, will participate in the lecture.
They will share their views on several aspects of the life and work of the author, who would be celebrating 100 years old on Friday, April 28.
Participants can purchase several of her books, including “Ensayos” (Essays) from Letras Cubanas publisher, the poetry collection “Sitio” (Site) from Ediciones Boloña publisher, and the essay “San Juan de la Cruz. De la palabra y el silencio” (San Juan de la Cruz. From Word to Silence) from Ediciones Vivarium publisher.
The priority is to pay tribute to Cuban writers, books, historical events, and institutions that reach closed anniversaries. El elogio oportuno (Timely praise) comes from José Martí’s aphorism “timely praise fosters merit, and lack of timely praise discourages it,” published on Patria newspaper in April 1892.
