A tsunami warning was issued for the northern region of Sumatra following the 84-kilometer-deep earth tremor, but it was canceled later.
According to the BMKG, the earthquake’s epicenter was 177 kilometers northwest of Mentawai Islands, near the Bantu Islands, and about 200 kilometers from the city of Padang, the capital of West Sumatra.
So far, authorities have not reported any material or human damage caused by the earthquake.
