China calls citizens to get vaccinated against new Omicron variant

Beijing, Apr 22 (Prensa Latina) Chinese experts on Saturday urged population, especially the most vulnerable, to get vaccinated against Covid-19 to avoid contagion given fresh Omicron XBB.1.16 variant nationwide.

Zhang Wenhong, director of Shanghai Center for Infectious Diseases, urged population to get boosters every six months, either with monovalent or bivalent products.

He cited the increasing availability of latest vaccines and advantages of increased protection against coronavirus and new variants.

Wenhong considered it vital the elderly, individuals with chronic pathologies and the unvaccinated people to go to health centers as soon as possible and choose any of the existing shots to get immunized against Covid-19.

According to health authorities, new Omicron XBB.1.16 variant- also known as Arcturus – is currently spreading in China.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is currently monitoring the progress of this new variant, as it could spread rapidly around the world and ramp up the toll of infected people.
