Portuguese civil society joins solidarity campaign for Cuba

Lisbon, Apr 20 (Prensa Latina) Cuba must be removed from the ignoble list of countries that sponsor terrorism, reads a statement released in Portugal on Thursday.

The press release was signed by more than 160 Portuguese intellectuals together with the Portugal-Cuba Friendship Association, who denounced the harassment to which Cuba is subjected by the United States.

The text points out that Cuba has been subjected to an illegal and unfair blockade imposed by different governments of the United States for over 60 years, which has condemned for the thirtieth time at the United Nations General Assembly by the vast majority of its member countries.

The note explains that the damage caused to Cuba by Washington’s blockade is estimated at 154 trillion dollars, including unspeakable human damage.

In addition to all 243 sanctions imposed by President Donald Trump, Washington once again included Cuba on the blacklist of State sponsors of terrorism.

“The Joe Biden administration has maintained the same policy as the previous government during its first two years, contrary to what it promised during the electoral campaign, introducing new measures that have further aggravated an already very difficult situation for the Cuban people,” the communiqué says.

Cuba is a country of peace and solidarity, as it has shown internationally and, in times of health crises and natural disasters, it has always been available to actively participate with its brigades in the relief of the population, the statement adds.

It recalls that Cuba has suffered from innumerable terrorist attacks that have caused thousands of deaths and injuries, such as the attack on its Embassy in Portugal on April 22, 1976, when two Cuban diplomats were killed.
